Shadow of the Colossus to hit the Colossal Screen

Sony has announced that they’ll be turning Shadow of the Colossus into a film and Chronicle’s Josh Trank will be the guy to do it.

Experience has taught me that whenever someone proposes to do a movie based on a video game I should be sceptical. Sony’s Shadow of the Colossus is notable in particular because of it being singled out as an artistic experience along the same lines as games like Flower, Journey or its predecessor / cousin, Ico.

SOTC was rich with ambience, sombre mood, fluid and gentle control and an overall atmosphere of calm in spite of grand scale. But ‘plot’ was not one of its strengths. In fact, it was thin and basically irrelevant.

So the question then becomes about whether or not the film makers can translate those initial qualities into a film worth seeing and then inject a compelling story after the fact? The track record isn’t great.

But I thought Chronical was a great film - a refreshing modern take on the superhero movie. So I am encouraged that Josh Trank is the guy they hired to do the job.
